As part of the Pharmacy textbook: Basic
Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics. An Integrated Textbook and Computer
Simulations, Second Edition, a short video is provided by Werner Weitschies (Department of Biopharmaceutics, University of
Greifswald, Greifswald, Germany).
A magnetically tagged capsule is shown emptying from the
stomach and travel through the duodenum and into the jejunum. The capsule is
depicted in the upper right corner of this slide, with a triangle pointing to
magnetic North. The figure of the
gastro-intestinal tract in the left panel shows the approximate configuration
of the stomach and duodenum in this subject. When you click on the red dot in
the middle of the slide to activate this video, the capsule tumbles in the
stomach before it makes an abrupt exit left into the duodenum, and then
traverses the entire 10 cm length of the duodenum left to right in about 8
seconds. As the capsule then begins to loop, it has entered the jejunum. Please
note that the real-time counter (in minutes) runs in the background during the
video.
